Guimarães Castle

Holiday Resolution

Guimarães Castle or Castelo de Guimarães is symbolically linked to the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal,
despite the fact that it was built before that period, dating back to Mumadona Countess (in the end of the 10th century). Strategically located, this castle rises upon the historical centre at the top of a hill. The current building is the result of succeeding reconstructions that began in the second half of the 13th century, only ending in the National Monuments campaign carried out in the 40’s in the 20th century. D. Henrique and D. Teresa, parents of th first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, have lived here. The wall has eight towers with battements, delimiting a patio. In the middle of this patio, you will find the imposing 27m high keep.
