Manchester ( /ˈmænɛstər/) is a city and metropolitan borough in England with a population of 510,700 (2012 est.). It lies within the United Kingdom's
second most populous urban area which has a population of 2.55 million. Manchester is located in the south-central part of North West England, fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south and the Pennines to the north and east, and an arc of towns with which it forms a continuous conurbation. The local authority is Manchester City Council, and the city's inhabitants are referred to as Mancunians /mæŋkˈjuːnɪənz/.

The city is famous for its architecture, culture, music, network media, science and engineering, social impact, and sport. Leading football clubs in the Premier League, Manchester City and Manchester United, came from this city. Manchester is also the birth place of the first railway station in the world, and where scientists first created a separate atoms and computer storage program. Manchester has two universities, one of which is the largest single university in the United Kingdom. Economic Manchester is one of the largest urban economy in the United Kingdom. Manchester is also the third city in the United Kingdom's most frequently visited by foreign tourists after London and Edinburgh, and the most visited in England (outside London).
