Venice (Venezia) is a city in northern Italy known both for tourism and for industry, and is the capital of the region Veneto,
with a population of about 272,000 (census estimate January 1, 2004). Together with Padua, the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area (population 1,600,000).

The name is derived from the ancient tribe of Veneti that inhabited the region in Roman times . Venice has been known as "La dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of the canal." Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described Venice as "the most beautiful city built by man undoubtedly." Times Online also stated Venice as one of the most romantic in Europe.

The city lies along the 117 small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. Saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths (south) Po and the Piave (north) Rivers. Estimated population of 272 000 people including the population of the whole Comune of Venice, where around 60,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico), 176,000 in Terraferma (Mainland), mostly in Mestre and Marghera large frazioni, and 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon.
